    The Blues are eager to reinforce their ranks after seeing promotion hopes in 2023-24 fade and a potential relegation dogfight in the Championship narrow collective focus. They are onto their third manager of the season, with Wayne Rooney given just 15 games at the helm after being appointed as successor to John Eustace.

    Reins have now been handed to ex-Celtic and Sunderland boss Mowbray, with the intention being to start climbing the table while putting foundations in place on which a push back towards the Premier League can be built.

    That project will require money to be spent, but Mowbray is eager to point out that little will be splashed in the current transfer window. He has told of how much recruitment business is being discussed at St Andrew’s: “Lots I would have to say, more than I expected. I'm quite hopeful, I think [technical director] Craig Gardner's going to have a busy few weeks. It's not a window where we can spend millions of pounds, but we can move things around.”
